Old San Juan Streetscape
Watercolor and pencil on Arches paper
I painted this on a hot day while in Old San Juan, the historic center of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Old San Juan is full of aged rambling blocks of beautiful buildings that offer shade and a cool tile floor when the tropical sun is blazing down.
One of the benefits of sitting and watching for a long time is that I get to observe the minute comings and goings of a place. The steady creep of gentrification. Old vines that eat at the stucco on the side of a once proud multistory structure. The sound of salsa music richocheting off the sides of the alley. Kids going to music lessons. The shifting shadows of the sun as the afternoon wanes.
