Giclée

Giclée printing (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is a method of reproducing fine art with the exact level of detail that existed in the original artwork. The word giclée comes from the French word "gicler", which means to spurt. It was coined by Jack Duganne in the early 1990's to describe the emerging art form of making prints from the highest quality digital scans of the original art on museum quality substrates with archival inks and high end inkjet printers. Giclée prints can be made on a variety of papers, as well as canvas.

My paintings, which are mostly watercolor and goache on paper, are suited perfectly to giclée reproduction because the originals are created with transparent pigments on paper. The corresponding prints are also made with transparent archival pigments on the highest quality watercolor paper. These pigments have been shown to last 100 years.

About the Prints

In choosing to reproduce my paintings to make them available for purchase to a wider audience, I carefully considered what the highest quality and most accurate method of printing would be. After extensive research and experimentation, I concluded that giclée prints would offer the highest fidelity vis-à-vis color and exacting detail.

My giclée prints are made from high resolution scans of the original art that are color-corrected and proofed to an exact color match of the originals. They are printed on Arches watercolor paper with archival quality pigments. The print is then sealed with a varnish that provides extra UV protection and adds richness and depth to the color.

The resulting prints look indistinguishable from the originals, and are a fraction of the cost of purchasing my original art.

Limited Edition vs. Open Edition

You will notice that every print on this site is sold both as a Limited Edition and Open Edition. So what are the differences?

My Limited Edition prints are usually limited to a print run of 250. They are the exact size as the original art. They are signed and numbered by me, and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. This provides you with an official document that testifies that this print is one of a limited number printed. It supplies the name of the printer, the number in the edition and the total number of prints in the edition. This document adds value to your purchase, and should be kept in a safe place as a record of your purchase and ownership.

Open Edition prints are typically about 20% smaller than Limited Edition prints. They are still signed by me, and are printed with the same attention to detail and color correctness as the Limited Edition prints. They are not limited in the size of their print run.

Free Shipping

Shipping is free to all customers worldwide. All shipments will be tracked, and you will be supplied with a tracking number if you supply your email address to me in the checkout process. I use the U.S Postal Service and FedEx. You can expect your print to arrive on your doorstep in 1-2 weeks in North America, and 2-4 weeks for the rest of the world.

Your print will be loosely rolled, placed inside a plastic sleeve and and shipped in a durable five inch diameter tube. When the print arrives, take it out of the tube, lay it out on a flat surface and place something flat and heavy (like a large format book) on top of the print. Your framer can also help you with this.

International Orders

International customers can expect their shipments in 2-4 weeks. You will be given a tracking number so that you can follow the progress of your print.

Framing

There are many ways to frame art. One method that I think looks great with works on paper such as mine is the "shadow box" method, where the art is mounted on a board and floats freely inside a frame that has some depth to it. The glass of the frame does not touch the art.

A more traditional way of framing, which also looks great, is to mount the art on a board, and place a matte border around the art. This matte can either overlap and press down on the art, or give the print some clearance. The matte and art would then be placed in a frame that has less depth and distance from the flat paper.

Guarantee

I offer a guarantee on all of the prints that I sell. If you are not happy with the print upon receiving it, send it back to me for a replacement or full refund.
